RUNDU, 03 APR (NAMPA) – The Kavango East under-20 (U-20) football team has vowed to make it through the group stages of the upcoming The Namibian Newspaper Cup.
The tournament is slated for Mariental in the Hardap Region from 19 to 22 April this year.
Speaking to Nampa on Wednesday, team manager Muremi Shinkumi said the team has been working hard since the beginning of March, preparing for the competition with the hope of making it through the group stages.
He added that their technical team selected 30 players for its current team, including nine players who participated in last year’s competition held in Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region.
“We also had a couple of friendly matches with big clubs to make sure that the boys are ready physically, mentally and psychologically,” said Shinkumi.
He added that a good technical team has been selected to complement the hard work of the players, with Bonifasius Kahare selected as head of delegation, while Julius Simbombo will serve as head coach.
Nyangana Ngandu is the assistant coach, Sebastian Kampanza the technical advisor, Clemens Namakoka the goalkeeper coach and Lukas Kazanga the kit manager.
Daniel Malembu will serve as medic, while Herculano Mwenyo is the logistics officer.
Looking at the group they were drawn in, Shinkumi said his primary concern is the //Kharas Region, which they expect to give them a tough time as they will be playing closer to home.
The team finished as runner-up at last year’s competition, losing 1-0 to winners Omaheke.
Kavango East was drawn in Group A alongside Oshikoto, //Kharas and Zambezi.
