WINDHOEK, 30 DEC (NAMPA) - The 21st Quinton-Steele Botes (QSB) Athletics Course and Training Camp is set to take place at the Independence Stadium in the capital from 06 to 10 January.
Speaking to Nampa from Swakopmund on Monday, Botes said they expect around 300 athletes and coaches to participate in the training camp. Besides the normal track and field events, a workshop for administrators and event organisers will also be held on the Wednesday (08 January).
The idea of this workshop is to assist officials in arranging better organised athletic events across the county, Botes said.
The longest-serving sponsor, Engen Namibia which has been involved in the event since its inception 21 years ago contributed N.dollars 7 000 which will provide orphans and vulnerable children from various houses of safety in and around Windhoek with the opportunity to take part in the training camp.
These children need to be taken up in the community to make them better citizens and restore their human dignity, Botes said.
The children are from the SOS Children's Village, Hope Village, Huis Maerua, Namibian Children's Home, and Wilderness Therapy. Engen is sponsoring their participation in the camp fully, and this includes payment of their registration fees and the provision of daily lunch packs.
They will also be transported to the event and back.
Botes told this news agency during the launch of the QSB Training Camp in October that 18 of the 20 coaches involved in the 2014 training camp are qualified Namibian coaches, with a third being female.
When the QSB Athletics Course started 21 years ago, more than 60 per cent of the coaches were from South Africa and Europe, Botes said, adding that the current state of affairs is the result of hard work and dedication. The week-long training course will end with a Marathon Sugar Mini Grand Prix on the Saturday, during which all coaches and athletes will put their theoretical experience into practice.
Registration for the QSB Athletics Course and Training Camp starts at 13h00 on 06 January, and will take place at the stadium.
The main sponsors of the event are Coca-Cola, Starlite, Engen, Wimpy Namibia, Avis Car Rentals, Tyres 2000, Hyundai, Marathon Sugar, Arebbusch Travel Lodge, Bank Windhoek and Exco.
