KEETMANSHOOP, 28 DEC (NAMPA) – A 47-year-old serial abuser from Keetmanshoop allegedly committed suicide by hanging a day before Christmas to avoid arrest.
Willem Frederick’s body was found hanging from a rope tied to the ceiling of an outside toilet in Tseiblaagte’s Nama Location.
Chief Inspector Bennie Groenewald of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) here told Nampa on Friday that Frederick’s girlfriend laid a case of assault against him on 23 December 2013.
He had been dodging the police, who were later alerted to his dead body.
“According to police records, he had been beating his girlfriend on several occasions, and the girlfriend filed assault charges against him in the past. So, maybe this time he decided to die than being arrested,”Groenewald said.
The chief inspector noted that the girlfriend laid more than four cases of assault and domestic violence against her now-deceased boyfriend before he died.
On a different note, Groenewald used the opportunity to discourage drinking in public and fighting during the festive season in this town.
“Mostly young people must adhere to the law - they must not drink in the street and fight,” he said.
The police chief also discouraged speeding as well as drinking and driving, especially on New Year’s Eve, saying it is for the safety of all Namibians.
