OTJIWARONGO, 23 MAR (NAMPA) - A newborn baby girl was dumped in the DRC informal settlement at Otjiwarongo on Saturday.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha told Nampa in an interview the baby was found by a passerby who heard her cry at a waste disposal point in the informal settlement.
The passerby alerted the police and healthcare workers at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital.
“We suspect she was dumped shortly after birth in the early hours of Saturday,” Mbeha said.
The baby weighs 1,4 kilogrammes and is in the care of nurses and members of NamPol’s Gender Based Violence Unit at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital.
A case of concealment of birth has been opened at the Otjiwarongo Police Station.
Mbeha called on the general public to contact the nearest police station should they have possible information on the matter, or on the woman involved in the matter to report herself to the police.
Police investigations continue.
