WINDHOEK, 22 MAR (NAMPA) – Otjinene All Stars won the Namibia Rural Sport Development Federation (NRSDF) Independence Cup held at the Khomasdal stadium in the capital on Thursday.
The tournament, held for the fist time, was aimed at celebrating Namibia’s independence and saw Aminius, Otjinene, Ovitoto and Epukiro All Stars compete in the one-day event.
In the first game of the tourney, Ovitoto defeated Aminius 2-1 and Otjinene stunned Epukiro 4–2 on penalties in the second game after a goalless draw.
A second half goal by Tjinotjiua Mata was enough to see Otjinene overcoming Ovitoto 1-0 in the final to be crown champions.
Meanwhile, a curtain raiser held before the final match between Epukiro Masters and Otjinene Old crocks saw Epukiro Masters crushing their Otjinene counterparts 5-0.
On his part, Otjinene All Stars coach, Aupaa Ndjavera said he was happy with the players’ input but his aim is not just about winning the competition.
“As a former premier league and national team player, my prime aim is always to see players from Otjinene and other rural areas playing in the premier league. I graduated from these types of competitions and I went as far as representing my country,” he said.
He also urged players to take their education seriously as sport is a short-term career.
Otjinene pocketed N. dollars 5 000 plus 20 gold medals as final winners, whereas Ovitoto walked away with N. dollars 2 500 plus 20 silver medals as the runners up.
