KEETMANSHOOP, 26 DEC (NAMPA) – A 19-year-old female committed suicide in her boyfriend’s room at Keetmanshoop by allegedly shooting herself to death with a pistol in the stomach on Wednesday.
She was identified as Kenorita Beukes from the town of Rehoboth in the Hardap Region.
The suicide took place at 12h55 in a flat next to the prison canteen at Keetmanshoop in the //Karas Region.
Confirming the incident to Nampa on Thursday, Chief Inspector Niikodemus Nampala of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Keetmanshoop said Beukes was declared dead on arrival at the local state hospital.
Nampala explained that the deceased came from Rehoboth to visit her boyfriend for his birthday on Wednesday.
While at the birthday party in the flat’s yard, a friend of Beukes’ boyfriend allegedly put his gun away in a drawer next to the bed.
“Beukes allegedly managed to see the weapon and sneaked inside, wrote a suicide note and then shot herself with the weapon,” Nampala told the news agency.
The chief inspector said he could disclose the content of the suicide note, for the moment.
He said the gun owner has not been charged for negligence in handling the firearm, as he had placed it in a drawer and closed it.
“We however subjected the boyfriend and the gun owner to a gunshot residue test so that we can factually determine whether it was indeed a suicide. We are waiting for the test results to come back and then we’ll see how to proceed with the case,” Nampala said.
