Rundu escapee suspects re-arrested

RUNDU, 11 MAR (NAMPA) – The two trial-awaiting suspects who escaped from the Rundu Police Station holding cells in the Kavango East Region on 05 March 2019 have been re-arrested.
The Namibian Police Force’s crime investigations coordinator for the region, Deputy Commissioner Bonifasius Kanyetu told confirmed the arrests to Nampa on Monday.
Kanyetu said the first suspect, Erastus Matome, 22, was arrested on Friday, while Sikata Abraham Hausiku, 28, was arrested on Monday at the Rundu open market.
The two suspects escaped from custody through a burglar door which they cut open before using an unknown object to open the main gate from the eastern side of the old holding cells.
Kanyetu said that the Matome is expected to appear in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Monday, while Hausiku will appear in court on Tuesday on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
“We just want to thank the members of the public who have assisted us with information to arrest the two suspects,” he said.
The two suspects were awaiting trial for alleged housebreaking and robbery committed in 2018.
