WINDHOEK, 07 MAR (NAMPA) – Cabinet has approved the Namibia Nation Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (NNAWPS) for the 2019/2020 and 2023/2024 financial years, in moving forward with United Nations Security Council (UN) resolution 1325 implemented in 2000.
This was revealed by Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Stanley Simataa at a media briefing on Cabinet resolutions in the capital on Thursday.
Simataa said the NNAWPS is aimed at promoting the participation of women in peace and security processes and decision-making structures.
“The UN resolution has a framework in Africa that guides the involvement of women in continental issues like the Southern Africa Development Community framework that strengthens the participation of women in peace-making missions,” the minister said.
Simataa further explained that as a country, Namibia needs to have a plan in place to effect key principles of the resolution at the national level.
“[The] plan also caters to Namibia to accommodate women [to] participate in decision-making structures,” he said.
UN resolution 1325 is a formal and legal document from the Security Council that requires parties in a conflict to prevent violations of women's rights, to support women's participation in peace negotiations and in post-conflict areas, protect women and girls from sexual and gender-based violence in armed conflicts.
