Power outage at Keetmanshoop leaves pensioners stranded

KEETMANSHOOP, 05 MAR (NAMPA) – Around 100 beneficiaries of Government social grants at Keetmanshoop were left stranded in front of the NamPost offices on Tuesday, due to a complete power outage at the southern town.
The group consisted of pensioners, disabled persons and others entitled to receive social grants from the government, some of whom had lined up for hours before opening time already.
NamPost makes such payments on the first Tuesday of every month.
The power was off for almost three hours in Keetmanshoop, and forced some shops to only open as late as 10h00 while auto teller machines around town were also off.
Upon enquiry, Keetmanshoop Municipality Public Relations Officer Dawn Kruger explained that there was a fault in one of the NamPower lines that supply electricity to the town and they needed to switch off all the lines in order to fix it.
“The fault was on the NamPower line that provides electricity to us, so for them to fix that line we needed to switch off the electricity to the whole town,” she said.
Kruger added that they could not make any announcements to alert the residents as it was something that was not planned at all and needed to be dealt with fast.
