WINDHOEK, 13 FEB (NAMPA) – The chairperson of the normalisation committee at the Namibia Football Association (NFA), Hilda Basson-Namundjebo said they do not recognise Barry Rukoro as the secretary general of the beleaguered body.
Speaking to Nampa in an interview on Wednesday, the newly appointed football administrator explained that their position emanated from communication from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) last year.
“FIFA has pronounced itself on this issue... I have seen documents that came from FIFA stating that Rukoro’s contract expired together with the term of the (previous) executive,” she said.
Basson-Namundjebo added that Rukoro did not commit to respond to FIFA to say he received the communication that clarifies his position at the football association.
“Rukoro is no longer regarded as an employee of the NFA. That’s the official position of FIFA and the NFA as we talk right now… We have no need to engage him, there is no relationship with him on any matter. But there is an institution which we are accountable to and that’s the NFA,” she declared emphatically.
However, Basson-Namundjebo said as the normalisation committee they will need the support of everyone in football and they will continue working with all the staff members who are currently employed at NFA.
“We are going to build ‘TEAM NFA’ through our engagements with everyone as opposed to the previous times where the SG ran the institution alone and made all executive decisions. Football is about teams,” she concluded.
She further said the committee has options within the football family to take over from Rukoro as SG.
Approached for comment, Rukoro however disputed Basson-Namundjebo’s explanation, saying he never received any communication from FIFA and never worked for FIFA.
“There is nothing like that, I have not received any communication from FIFA since August last year. I am currently at the office and I am still dispatching my duties until the committee comes to me and explains my position,” he said.
Rukoro added that a meeting between him and Basson-Namundjebo was set for Wednesday at 10h00 but she allegedly did not show up and he was still waiting for her.
“She came into the office and collected my personal file at NFA which has my contract. I am waiting for her to get back to me. If I am fired by FIFA, why did she collect my whole personal file?” he asked.
He added that he is now going to consult on the way forward as “it appears that there are other agendas” which will require a different approach, and also requested that he be furnished with the letter from FIFA which relieved him of his duties.
The appointment of the normalisation committee, with Basson-Namundjebo as chairperson, was announced last week. Franco Cosmos is vice-chairperson, while the other committee members are Gabby Ahrens, Matti Mwandingi and Vivienne Katjiuongua.
They will serve as the custodians of local football for four months.
