REHOBOTH, 11 FEB (NAMPA) – The Namibian Newspaper Cup organising committee will pay a visit to Mariental on Tuesday for a final inspection meeting with the local organising committee as the Hardap capital readies itself to host the 2019 edition.
The annual youth tournament for Under-20 regional players will be hosted during the Easter weekend of 19-22 April.
Hardap successfully bid for the event late last year and was chosen ahead of ||Kharas and Oshana to host the 2019 edition of the much-anticipated football and netball games.
A statement availed to Nampa on Monday said as part of the criteria to host the tourney, the host town must have a stadium with artificial or natural grass; a minimum capacity for 2 000 people and suitable lighting for night games as well as a public address system.
It said the bidding towns are also informed that the Namibia Football Association (NFA) and The Namibian newspaper retain the commercial rights to the competition and there should be acceptable accommodation for a delegation from each region as well for match officials, NFA and the newspaper officials.
Medical standby for the duration of the tournament, catering and security are also among the conditions for hosting the event.
Approached for comment on their preparedness, Hardap Governor Esme Isaack, whose office is spearheading the process, said the region is ready to host the event.
“We are ready at 95 per cent and busy with the completion of the new netball courts. We are hard at work with relevant stakeholders to host a memorable event like we did in 2005 and I believe the inspection team will go back to Windhoek with smiles on their faces,” Isaack noted.
In 2005, Hardap lost 1-0 in the final against the star-studded Otjozondjupa in Mariental before making amends to win the competition in 2006 in Walvis Bay, Erongo Region.
