RUNDU, 10 FEB (NAMPA) – Former mayor of Rundu, the late Hilka Leevi was on Saturday honoured after a new suburb under construction was named after her by Armstrong Properties.
The developers named the new suburb situated along the B10 Rundu to Nkurenkuru road Hilka Park.
Armstrong Properties managing director, Ferdinand Olavi said they saw it fit to name the new location after the late mayor because of her contributions towards the development of Rundu.
Olavi said the project, projected to run for five years, is being constructed in two phases in which the first phase will be the construction of 600 modern housing units.
He added that the project will also house a fuel station, shopping centre, clinic and a school and will afford an opportunity for first-time buyers to own a house.
Rundu Urban Constituency councillor, Victoria Kauma commended Armstrong Properties for the gesture and urged them to continue contributing to the development of the town.
She said the company should also consider offering some of its shares to the community as a way of giving back to the community in which they live in.
Kauma further went on to urge people in attendance to desist from jealousy, saying they should unite towards development since disunity causes a lot of problems.
The daughter of the late mayor, Eveline Nghende in her acceptance speech thanked the company for honouring her mother in such a way, noting she heard about the idea but never thought it would come to fruition.
“It is such a great honour to have her remembered in this way. Her legacy will surely live on,” she said.
The ceremony was also attended by Mbunza Traditional Authority Chief, Alfons Kaundu together with about 14 people whose houses under construction are about to be completed.
Leevi died last year in September after a long illness.
She served in the Rundu Town Council as mayor from 2010 to 2015.
