WINDHOEK, 07 FEB (NAMPA) – Salute Boxing Academy (SBA) is set to host its first-ever boxing tournament in Rundu on 30 March 2019 after signing a sponsorship deal with Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC).
The tournament is themed ‘The Kavango River Fray’ and will feature Jonas Matheus who will defend his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Bantamweight International Champion title against a yet to be named foreign opponent.
This was announced by MTC SBA general manager Armas Shivute at a press conference here Thursday.
He said: “Indications are that people are looking forward to this tournament and we have also received support from the Governor of Kavango East Samuel Mbambo who has promised us cooperation from both the private and public sector.”
He added that a number of boxers from Kavango East and West will also partake in the tournament with a full boxing card to be announced as soon as all logistics are in place.
Matheus boosts a good record of 14 fights, 11 wins, one draw and two defeats and will be looking at chances of boosting his record and getting a shot at a world title in the near future.
Shivute further commended MTC for coming on board as the main sponsor of the academy, saying this partnership will give an opportunity to more youngsters from all corners of the country to pursue boxing as a career.
He pointed out that the country has many potential boxers who can go on to win world titles as long as they continue receiving support from corporates like MTC.
In December 2018, MTC announced that it will sponsor SBA and the Nestor Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy to the tune of N.dollars 1.6 million per stable spread over three years.
The sponsorship deal runs from December 2018 until December 2021 and will culminate to a total N.dollars 4.9 million investment per stable.
