KEETMANSHOOP, 06 FEB (NAMPA) – A 32-year-old former police officer accused of murdering his girlfriend at Koës in November last year, was granted bail of N.dollars 4 000 in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The accused, Paul Rooi appeared before Magistrate Melissa Mungunda who postponed his case to 19 February this year for further police investigations.
During his first court appearance on 05 November, Rooi was denied bail out of fear that he might interfere with State witnesses.
He was also denied bail because police investigations were at an early stage and it was not in the public interest for bail to be granted.
During the hearing on Wednesday, prosecutor Joas Neemwatya told the court that the State no longer opposed the granting of bail to the accused.
“We have received a letter from the deceased’s family that they no longer oppose the granting of bail and that they see no reason for the accused not to be granted bail,” Neemwatya informed the court.
Mungunda granted Rooi bail on condition that he surrenders his travelling documents to the investigating officer and that he does not obtain any travelling documents.
Bail was also granted on condition that the accused does not interfere with police investigations and State witnesses.
The accused was also instructed to report to the Karasburg Police Station every Monday between 09h00 and 19h00.
Rooi was represented by Louis le Grange during his bail application.
It is alleged that Rooi and his girlfriend, Marna Hanse had a fight in front of a club at the village on the night of 01 November 2018.
Friends took Hanse home, where her family discovered that she was bleeding from the mouth. She was taken to the clinic where she died.
