RUNDU, 03 FEB (NAMPA) - Julinho Sporting Football Club (FC) defeated Mighty Gunners FC 2-0 to occupy third position on the Namibia Premier League in a match played on Saturday at the Rundu Sport Stadium.
The match offered entertaining and attacking football to a fully-packed Rundu Sports Stadium as both teams showed character from the onset.
However, the visiting team encountered a setback when one of its players, Elmo Kambindu, was given a straight red card just 15 minutes into the game for stepping on an opposition player.
As the match progressed, both teams launched some dangerous attacks in the others half but could not convert their chances, heading into the second stanza goalless.
In the second half of the match, Julinhos powerful and marauding striker, Almeida Fransisco caught the visitors napping and gave the home team the lead in the 58th minute.
Almeida scored when he challenged for a ball in he air against the goalkeeper, flicking the ball from the goalkeepers hands to slot the loose ball into an empty net.
As the game progressed, the visitors also started launching some brilliant attacks but Julinhos goalkeeper, Marthin Paulus, was up for the task to deny the visitors from two goalscoring chances.
Almeida was again up for the task when he scored his second goal of the match in extra time to put the game to bed.
Speaking to Nampa after the match, Gunners coach, Gerald Hengari said the team encountered an early setback when one of his player was sent off early.
It was disappointing. We had a setback when our player was sent off and that gave us the pressure to defend deep and attack at the same time, he added.
He noted that the defeat has also put a dent into their hopes of toping the league, saying that is how football is.
Julinho Sporting coach, Nelson Luis said it was a good game as they found Mighty Gunners napping and his boys showed the lion spirit in them.
We believe that God is with us and we trust that the lord will be with us, added Luis.
Julinho FC now stand third on the log with 17 points from nine games played thus far with two games in hand, while Gunners are second on the log with 21 points from 11 games played so far.
