WINDHOEK, 31 JAN (NAMPA) – The town of Otjiwarongo in collaboration with Athletics Namibia will host the inaugural National Cross-Country Championship Run.

Cross Country Running is an athletic event run over open land or grass fields or parks over a two-kilometre loop course.

Berthold Karumendu, Regional Sport Officer in Omaruru and the organiser of the event said its aim is to bring back excitement in long-distance running in the country.

“A two-kilometre loop course will be laid-out at Paresis Park Sport Fields in Otjiwarongo, on Saturday, 02 February 2019. It will really be fun to watch these athletes taking each other on in a short loop,” he said.

Karumendu added that there will be athletes from all Political Regions in the Southern African Development Community.

“This initiative is to promote and support cross country running, grass root development, talent identification and mass participation. We want to bring back cross country running in Namibia and hopefully have more long-distance runner representing Namibia at future international competitions,” Karumendu said.

The National Cross-Country Championships will serve as national trials to select a team that will represent Namibia at the upcoming Confederation of African Athletics Southern Region (CAASR) Cross Country Championships in Lesotho on the 02 March 2019 and the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Cross Country Championships in Denmark on 30 March 2019.
