WINDHOEK, 30 JAN (NAMPA) - The 34th edition of the Nedbank Cycle Challenge was launched here on Wednesday.
Hosted in and around Windhoek, the Nedbank Cycle Challenge is the largest participatory cycling event on the Namibian cycling calendar with over 1000 cyclist expected to part-take this year.
Dan Craven was crowned the champion of the 2018 Nedbank Cycle Challenge in the mens category while Vera Adrian won the womens section of the Cycle Challenge.
Speaking at the launch, Nedbank Namibia Chief Financial Officer, JG van Graan said the event has proven its stain power for over three decades, which has truly earned its moniker as the Greatest Ride Under The Sun.
From our vantage point, the quality of Namibian cycling in all of its facets is being recognised from both a continental and global perspective and is evidenced by virtue of the International Cycling Union-sanctioned races that our country has been hosting, culminating in the African Continental Mountain bike Championships that will be hosted right in our backyard, as it were, in April, he said.
Van Graan added that Nedbank Namibia pride themselves in having played an integral role in helping youthful cyclists to show case their talent as well as seeing senior cyclists playing mentoring roles which is a sight to behold and augurs well for the competitive spirit that embodies the nation.
As usual the Nedbank Cycle Challenge will comprise of three events all taking place in the month of February.
The Road Challenge is scheduled for Sunday, 10 February, starting in front of the Nedbank Branch in Independence Avenue.
Cyclists will ride through the beautiful city of Windhoek and its surrounding areas, covering distances of 20 kilometre (km), 30km, 60km and 100km for elite cyclists.
The Kidz Challenge will take place at the Waldorf School in Avis on Saturday, 23 February while on Sunday, 24 February the Mountain Bike Challenge will also be hosted at the Waldorf School.
Cyclists will hit the trails in a race testing not only technical agility but speed and racing prowess.
