KEETMANSHOOP, 29 JAN (NAMPA) – It is now safe to consume abalone from the Lüderitz aquaculture production area, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources announced.
In a statement issued to the media on Monday, the ministry said that early this month, abalone samples from the Lüderitz aquaculture production area were collected and submitted for testing.
The samples taken were tested for paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) by the Namibian Standards Institution as guided by the National Shellfish Sanitation Programme, and it was found that it was unfit for human consumption.
“Two consecutive re-tests produced negative results and abalone may therefore be harvested for direct human consumption,” reads the statement.
