Negligent driving cause death and injuries in Kavango West

RUNDU, 27 JAN (NAMPA) – A 42 year-old man was arrested on Friday for reckless and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol when a vehicle he was driving overturned at Mutjokotjo village in the Kavango West Region.
Namibian Police Force regional crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Rudolf Mbumba told Nampa on Sunday it is alleged that the driver of the white Toyota van was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
He was traveling from Nzinze village to Rupeho village when he lost control of the van upon reaching Mutjokotjo village, resulting into the vehicle overturning, said Mbumba.
The incident happened around 17h00.
Mbumba said four passengers traveling in the vehicle sustained minor to serious injuries.
The suspect has been arrested and detained at Kahenge Police Station, while the injured were rushed to Nankundu District Hospital for medical attention.
In a separate incident in the same region, a 42-year-old woman lost her life after she was thrown out of the vehicle she was traveling in, after it skidded off the road at Ekuli village on Thursday afternoon.
It is alleged that the driver of the pick-up traveling from Nambi village lost control of the vehicle at Ekuli, causing it to leave the road.
Mbumba said three of the remaining passengers sustained minor injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Katalina Siromba Nkonye.
Her body was taken to Nankundu Health Centre mortuary for a post-mortem and her next of kin have been informed.
Mbumba said a case of culpable homicide and negligent and reckless driving has been registered and investigations into the matter continues.
