WINDHOEK, 23 JAN (NAMPA) – Leadership positions in Swapo are not for sale, the party’s Secretary-General, Sophia Shaningwa told members on Wednesday.
Only loyalty and commitment to the party count, Shaningwa said while speaking at the official opening for Swapo’s regional coordinators in Windhoek.
Shaningwa also said last-minute payments of the membership fee will not be entertained, adding that it is an election year and the party will conduct internal democratic processes to elect members for the National Assembly.
“We want party members and cadres to consistently be in good and regular standing in terms of their payments and not wait for elections to pay huge amounts for the purposes of positions only,” she said.
Shaningwa said every party member is expected to fully comply with the party’s constitution and there is no room for indiscipline or “special treatment”.
The secretary-general also indicated that this year the party will renew the mandates of all sections, branches and districts.
She further said requirements for positions such as regional coordinator should have been a member of the party for at least consecutive 10 years and information and mobilisation officers for five years.
“There have been reports that some cadres have been elected into positions of authority without meeting the requirements. All leaders must meet the requirements as stipulated in the policy documents,” said Shaningwa.
She noted that the party wants to ensure that each election is conducted in a free, transparent and fair manner, therefore election committees for each election will be established in accordance with the rules and procedures.
The Presidential and National Assembly Elections will take place in November.
