WINDHOEK, 22 JAN (NAMPA) – Former army commander, Retired Major General Peter Nambundunga, has been accorded a State funeral by President Hage Geingob.
Nambundunga died at Ongwediva on 14 January 2019, at the age of 72.
A statement issued Monday said a period of national mourning during which all flags in Namibia will be flown at half-mast, will be observed from 23 to 26 January 2019.
With a State funeral, Government arranges the burial and covers all funeral costs.
The remains of the late Nambundunga will be interred at Omugulugombashe in Omusati Region on Saturday, the statement said.
“Major General (Retired) Nambundunga leaves behind a rich legacy of service in the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia and as Army Commander in the Namibian Defence Force,” President Geingob was quoted as saying in the statement.
Nambundunga joined the Namibian Defence Force as a colonel at independence in 1990 and served in various positions such as chief of staff, army commander and acting chief of the defence force before his retirement in 2011.
After his retirement from active military service, he was appointed as special advisor to the governor of the Ohangwena Region by former President Pohamba in 2014 and reappointed by President Geingob in 2017 - a position he held until the time of his death.
