RUNDU, 20 JAN (NAMPA) – Julinho Sporting Football Club hammered Orlando Pirates 2-0 during their Namibia Premier League encounter at the Rundu Sports Stadium on Saturday, sending the Katutura giants to the bottom of the league.
The match, played at a packed stadium, saw the “Lions” as Julinho are also known, dominating play from the start.
The opening minutes however saw both teams missing clear scoring chances.
Before the break, Julinho’s Manuel Fransisco gave the visiting team’s defence a run for their money when he broke away from the defenders, unleashing a shot, only to be denied by the goalkeeper.
Both teams went into the break goalless.
In the second stanza of the match, Mwala Muwana gave the home team the lead in the 46th minute.
As the match progressed, both teams launched some promising attacks but could not convert their chances.
However, Orlando’s shot stopper was caught off guard in the 86th minute when he let a volley by Reinhold Shivute through, giving the home team a two goal lead.
Julinho’s mentor and team owner, Nelson Luiz, was jubilant after the match, saying the team’s hard work and dedication paid off.
“Congratulations to my team and we appreciate the support of our supporters. We have been complaining about support all the time, but this time we got it,” said Luiz.
He also expressed his apprecation for the support the team has been receiving from the Zambezi Region in addition to Kavango East and West, saying they are in the premier league to represent the north-eastern regions.
Pirates coach, Lucky Kakuva showed his disappointment after the match.
“Our objective was to at least get a draw or the needed results,” said Kakuva.
He said there is a psychological challenge in the team at the moment from a goalkeeping perspective as their goalkeeper lacks confidence, which sees them concede silly goals.
“But in terms of our overall play, our guys are trying everything possible to get the results,” he said.
The defeat sees the Katutura giants at the bottom of the league with three points only from nine matches played thus far, while Julinho occupies fifth position with 13 points from seven matches.
