Water interruptions at Rundu after pumps damaged by lightning

RUNDU, 20 JAN (NAMPA) – There will be water interruptions in most residential areas in Rundu until 31 January, NamWater announced on Sunday.
The Namibia Water Corporation’s area manager in the region, John Muremi in a statement said one of their production pumps at Nkarapamwe was struck by lightning, while the other pump had mechanical failures.
“Currently we are running one raw water pump that delivers three times less than the demand,” he explained.
The affected residential areas are Katutura, Safari, Kehemu, Millenium, Ndama, Kaisosi, Donkerhoek, the army base and Masivi, where supply will be suspended between 11h00 and 15h00 every day.
Muremi said the industrial area, Tutungeni, and Sauyemwa residential areas will also experience low water pressure as the high demand exceeds production.
“The technical team is working around the clock to rescue the situation. One big pump was delivered and installed on Friday and new pumps are being procured,” he said.
Muremi called on residents to use water wisely and keep their taps closed at all times in order to preserve water.
Critical places such as the hospital will be assisted with a tanker when the need arises.
