WINDHOEK, 12 JAN (NAMPA) - President Hage Geingob, in his capacity as Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), has congratulated Andry Rajoelina for being elected president of Madagascar.

Madagascar’s High Constitutional Court chairman Jean-Eric Rakotoarisoa on Tuesday proclaimed Rajoelina the winner of the presidential vote in that country, rejecting rival accusations of fraud.

Geingob, in a media statement issued on Friday, commended both leaders who ran for the runoff presidential election - Andry Rajoelina and Marc Ravalomanana - for accepting the outcome of the results.

“By accepting the results, you have demonstrated that the interests of the people of Madagascar come first,” Geingob said.

Geingob stated that Namibia is committed to the principles of democratic contestation and the peaceful transition of power as essential conditions for socio-economic development.

Geingob wished Rajoelina a successful and peaceful term and vowed that as SADC Chairperson; Namibia will continue to support the people and government of Madagascar.
