Three people die in accident on Otjiwarongo-Otavi road

OTJIWARONGO, 23 DEC (NAMPA) – An eight month-old baby was one of three people who died instantly in an accident near Otjiwarongo in the early hours of Sunday.
A 22-year-old man and a woman aged 23 also died in the accident that occurred 22 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo.
Acting Otjozondjupa Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Detective Chief Inspector Hendrik Kharuchab told Nampa Sunday an Iveco minibus with 22 occupants and an Opel Corsa pick-up with nine occupants were involved.
He said preliminary police investigations indicated that the minibus and pick-up were driving behind each other towards Otavi when the minibus allegedly hit the pick-up from behind, forcing it off the road.
“A baby, man and woman were thrown out of the pick-up and they died on the spot,” said Kharuchab.
Six other people who were also travelling in the pick-up aged 10, 16, 20, 24, 25 and 54 sustained slight to serious injuries and were taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital for medical attention.
The 20-year-old man and 25-year-old woman were transferred to the Katutura Intermediate Hospital in Windhoek in critical condition.
All 22 occupants of the minibus survived the accident unharmed.
The relatives of the deceased are yet to be informed.
A culpable homicide docket against the 39-year-old bus driver has been opened at the Otjiwarongo Police Station.
Police investigations continue.
