OTJIWARONGO, 21 DEC (NAMPA) – A 39-year-old man on Friday appeared in the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court where he was denied bail in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Maria Muhongi.
Commander of the Namibian Police Force in the Otjozondjupa Region, Commissioner Heinrich Tjiveze told Nampa the accused, Thuhafeni Mandjengo was arrested on Thursday after Muhongi was discovered dead at a reserve farm in the Okahandja district that same day.
“The accused person appeared in court at Okahandja on a charge of murder and he was remanded in custody there for further police investigations and also to allow him to secure a Legal Aid lawyer,” said Tjiveze.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the 39-year-old Muhongi on Wednesday night was beaten and kicked all over her body, allegedly by the accused during a quarrel, he said.
“It is still unknown what the two were quarrelling about, and also the exact time Muhongi died as her lifeless body was only discovered on Thursday morning,” Tjiiveze said.
The incident occurred at the Tjuapaeke Reserve Farm situated about 20 kilometres east of Okahandja.
The next of kin of Muhongi have been informed of her death and police investigations continue.
