Runda village to host football and netball tournament

RUNDU, 20 DEC (NAMPA) – Runda village in the Kavango West Region will host the sixth edition of the Runda Annual Sports Tournament from Friday until Sunday.
Chairperson of the organising committee, Phillemon Rengi, told Nampa in an interview Wednesday the tournament is meant to promote sports at grassroots level and uplift the standard of village football and netball, as well to entertain the inhabitants of Runda and surrounding villages.
He said the tournament, which started with a mere N.dollars 3 000 at its inception in 2013, has now turned into a big tournament worth N.dollars 20 000 and added that credit should be given to the youth of Runda.
“I must thank the youth of Runda for the financial support and commitment they have rendered to this good cause from day one. For the last five years, this tournament has been sponsored from the pockets of the youth of the village,” said Rengi.
The winner in the football category this year will walk away with N.dollars 8 000 , a floating trophy and gold medals. Second place will get N.dollars 6 000 and silver medals, while third place will take home N.dollars 4 000 and bronze medals.
In the netball category, the winner will take home N.dollars 1 500, a trophy and gold medals, while second place will get N.dollars 1 100 and silver medals, with the third-placed team walking away with N.dollars 800 and bronze medals.
Last year’s edition was won by Simanya village in the football category while Mpungu village won the netball category.
Runda is situated about 53 kilometres west of Nkurenkuru in the Mpungu Constituency.
