ONGWEDIVA, 18 DEC (NAMPA) – The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Omusati Region have called on motorists to ensure the tyres of their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on long journeys or carrying passengers.
Warrant Officer Anna Kunga made the call in an interview with Nampa on Monday, following reports of a silver Mercedes Benz sedan, carrying a bridal party, that overturned on the Oshakati-Okahao road after one tyre burst on Saturday.
The crash happened around 19h00 near the Oshuuli village in the Elim Constituency.
One person died the following day in the intensive care unit of the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.
Police identified the deceased as 53-year-old Beata Iiyambo from Etunda village in the Omusati Region’s Okahao Constituency.
Five other occupants, including the bride and bridegroom, sustained minor to serious injuries.
“All were transported to the Okahao State Hospital. Thereafter, three were transferred to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital due to the seriousness of their injuries,” she explained.
Kunga also appealed to motorists to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol this festive season.
