GABORONE, 16 DEC (NAMPA) – Namibia missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in the 4x100 metre (m) relay event at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Under-20 Youth Games on Saturday.
The AUSC U-20 Youth Games are taking place in Gaborone, Botswana from 06 to 16 December 2018.
Namibia’s Zuriel April, Sandro Diergaardt, Kenneth Tities and Warren Goreseb finished fourth in the 4x100m event on the last day of the track and field events at the competition on Saturday afternoon.
The host nation won the gold, South Africa came second and Zimbabwe third in a photo finish with the Namibian team.
Namibia did not have a team in the 4x400m relay event which was the last event of the day.
Speaking to Nampa on Saturday, team coach Belinda Oberholzer said she was happy with the athletes’ performance despite them missing out on a medal on the final day.
“In the 4x100m event we were supposed to get a bronze medal, because Botswana did not comply with the rules at their final button handover and were supposed to be disqualified for that. It did not happen but I am happy that we were so competitive throughout the competition,” she said.
She added that the team’s achievements at the competition were a sign of hard work and with more support these athletes will do well for the country.
Athletics team manager at the competition, Xenia Pieterse also told Nampa that if this group of athletes are kept together, they will do well at this same competition in the future.
“Only four or five athletes will be over-age at the next AUSC Youth Games that will be hosted in Lesotho in two years’ time, that’s why it’s important that we keep this team together and in 2020 we will be able to win many medals for Namibia,” she said.
