GABORONE, 15 DEC (NAMPA) – Namibian athletes competing in track and field events won three more medals at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Under-20 Youth Games on Friday night.

The AUSC U-20 Youth Games are taking place in Gaborone, Botswana from 06 to 16 December 2018.

On Friday javelin athletes took centre stage as they won the country two silver medals and a bronze.

Bernhard Wessels, won a silver medal in the men’s event while Wilhelm Ludwig Huber took a bronze in the same event.

In the lady’s category Wilmé Els also added a silver medal to team Namibia’s winnings on the day.

Team Namibia currently has 27 medals at the championships - three gold, eight silver and 16 bronze.

Speaking to Nampa on Friday, athletics manager at the competition, Xenia Pieterse said the Games are competitive and that Namibian athletes are giving their counterparts a good run.

“We are really doing well in the field events compared to the track. I am hopeful that despite our athletes not winning as we wanted in the track events, they are gaining enough experience as well as exposure which is good for future competitions,” she said.

The track and field athletes will compete in their last events of the competition on Saturday afternoon in the 4x100 metre relay for both male and female.
