GABORONE, 13 DEC (NAMPA) – Namibian athletes competing in track and field events continue to shine at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five Under-20 Youth Games after adding three more medals to their tally on Wednesday night.
The AUSC U-20 Youth Games are taking place in Gaborone, Botswana from 06 to 16 December 2018.
Natalie Louw, who won Namibia’s first gold medal at the competition, added a silver on Wednesday after finishing second in the high jump event. Warren Goreb also won a silver medal in the 400 metre (m) hurdles, while Ryan Williams won a bronze for Namibia in the shot put event also on Wednesday.
Team Namibia currently has 18 medals at the championships - two gold, five silver and 11 bronze.
Speaking to Nampa on Wednesday, athletics manager at the competition, Xenia Pieterse said the competition is really tough but they are happy that their athletes are giving it their all in their respective events.
“We are building a team for the future and I am happy to see that despite the competition being tough, our athletes are doing well and won us some medals. If we keep some of these athletes, they can really be developed for future competitions like the Olympics, where they can compete well,” she said, explaining the valuable international experience being garnered by her youthful team.
