Namibia wins first gold at AUSC Region Five Games

GABORONE, 11 DEC (NAMPA) – Team Namibia won three medals in long jump and discus throw at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five, Under-20 Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana on Tuesday.
During the morning session, Natalie Louw and Chantell du Toit won the gold and silver medals in the long jump event, respectively.
Louw jumped a distance of 5.70 metres (m) while Du Toit came second with a distance of 5.49m.
In the discus event, Ryan Williams finished third with a throw of 46.81m behind South African athletes who took gold and silver.
Team Namibia also won two more bronze medals Monday night in swimming, with Heleni Stergiadis finishing third in the 400m freestyle in a time of 4:39.06. The second bronze medal from swimming came from the 4x50m ladies freestyle relay team, who finished their race with a time of 1:56.48.
South Africa took the gold in that event, with a new championship record time of 1:45.17 to Zimbabwe’s 1:54.76, who came second.
Team Namibia has won seven medals at the championships thus far: one gold, two silver and four bronze.
Female swimmers Heleni Stergiadis, Tiana Esslinger, Ju-Ane Oberholzer and Zune Weber won a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay. Juan Johnson won bronze in the 91+ kilogramme men’s judo event on Saturday.
Corne le Roux also won a bronze medal for Team Namibia in swimming on Monday, with a time of 2:14.39.
Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe are also taking part in the AUSC Region Five U-20 Youth Games which end on 16 December.
The Namibian team is competing in football (men and women), track and field, boxing, netball, swimming, basketball, judo, volleyball (men and women) and tennis.
