WINDHOEK, 06 DEC (NAMPA) – African Stars Football Club advanced to the second round of the 2018/19 Confederation of African Football Champions League after defeating Volcan Club from The Comoros Islands by 2-1 at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The match, which attracted only a handful of spactators, saw a strong start from Stars, who scoring within the first five minutes through their Zimbabwean striker, Crispen Mbewe.
The tall forward met Edwin Korukuve’s well-timed cross from the right flank and had the easiest task of tapping the ball into the back of the net.
The home team then seemed to go to sleep as they allowed the visitors to put them under pressure as they failed to hold onto possession.
The pressure paid off for the visitors as they equalised through a beautiful shot by Diaritiana Solonaina Rakotonanahary, which beat Ratanda Mbazuvara.
The visitors continued playing beautiful football and building from the back but failed to create any meaningful chances, while Stars’ players struggled to find each other, with captain Ronald Ketjijere, Mbewe and Ivan Kamberipa being the only notable performers for the home side.
In the 42nd minute, Kamberipa won a ball deep in his own half and pushed forward to find playmaker Aubrey Amseb.
The diminutive player beat his marker for speed and pulled his cross back for the on rushing Gustav Isaak, whose first time, curling shot found the back of the net, to make it 2-1 for Stars into halftime.
Second half saw the visiting side continue with its beautiful build-up play from the back but still failed to trouble Mbazuvara and his defence.
In the 66th minute, Tjiuana-Tja Tjatindi’s cross found Korukuve at the back post but his header flashed across the goal as Stars looked for a third goal.
In the 71st minute, Tjatindi again beat a Volcan Club player and laid an inch-perfect pass to Mbewe, whose shot from the penalty area went way over the bar.
In the 89th minute, substitute Rodger Katjiteo could have made the game safe for his side but his clever chip was tipped off for a corner kick by the visitors’ goalkeeper, Salimo Velonjara.
For winning the encounter and the two legs 2-1 on aggregate, African Stars will next tackle South African giants and former continental champions, Orlando Pirates in the next round of the competition.
