ONGWEDIVA, 04 DEC (NAMPA) – The police in the Omusati Region on Monday opened a case of attempted murder and concealment of birth against a woman who allegedly dumped her newborn baby girl in a pit latrine.
Inspector Linekela Shikongo of the Namibian Police Force’s Public Relations Unit in the region told Nampa on Tuesday the woman allegedly committed the offence at Okapya kaMbidhi village in the Ogongo Constituency around 06h00 on Monday.
Shikongo said the baby’s grandmother discovered her after hearing her cry in the toilet, which is situated a few metres from their homestead.
The toilet was then dismantled and the baby was successfully retrieved, he said.
“Both the baby and mother were taken to the Oshikuku Roman Catholic Hospital, where they are admitted under police guard,” he said, adding that the two are in a stable condition.
The woman will appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court as soon she is fit to stand trial.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
