OTJIWARONGO, 29 NOV (NAMPA) - A fundraising gala dinner for the first-ever trade expo of the Kalkfeld settlement in the Otjozondjupa Region raised more than N.dollars 183 000 in cash and pledges at Otjiwarongo on Wednesday night.
The Kalkfeld settlement falls under the Otjozondjupa Regional Council and is situated about 70 kilometres southwest of Otjiwarongo.
Otjozondjupa Governor, Otto Ipinge pledged the highest amount of N.dollars 100 000 from his office.
Kalkfeld is close to my heart. I want to see development at that settlement as it is strategically located, said Ipinge.
Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council, Julius Neumbo said his office plans to hold the expo in April or June 2019 when farmers, government agencies and community members in tourism and hospitality, amongst others, can come and exhibit their goods to create a platform for business interaction.
Neumbo said as Kalkfeld was proclaimed a village council in 1991, but downgraded to a settlement in 1996 due to a lack of development activities and growth, the expo aims to ignite business zeal and activate economic growth for the settlement.
He said the money raised at the gala dinner will be used to organise and host the expo.
Kalkfeld resident Wilfred Nuwuseb, who spoke on behalf of the community members, appealed to private individuals and businesspeople to come and invest in infrastructure development at the settlement for Kalkfeld to return to its glory days.
Nuwuseb also called on his community to support this noble idea, saying the expo will create temporary jobs for the unemployed youth and generate income for the local small and medium enterprises.
Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, Zephania Kameeta was named patron of the expo.
