OTJIWARONGO, 27 NOV (NAMPA) - The peaceful demonstration planned for Tuesday by some Swapo party members in the Otjozondjupa Region was called off earlier the same day.
Representative of the aggrieved members, Julius Neumbo told Nampa on Tuesday they decided against the demonstration after the national leaders responsible for the region suggested a meeting to discuss the group’s concerns.
Neumbo and his group last Wednesday petitioned the party’s Otjozondjupa Co-ordinator Susan Hikopua about their unhappiness with the current leadership in the region and said a demonstration would take place Tuesday.
“We agreed to put it on hold until a meeting is convened between us and the regional Swapo-party leadership where our differences will be discussed,” said Neumbo, without revealing when the meeting will take place or who will attend.
On her part, Hikopua told this agency Tuesday she received a phone call from Swapo Secretary-General (SG) Sophia Shaningwa last Thursday, telling her the demonstration will not take place.
“So I am not surprised that it is called off,” said Hikopua.
Last Wednesday, she expressed disappointed upon receiving the notice of the march, saying the concerned Swapo members were supposed to know the structures which can be used to address their concerns within the party instead of demonstrating against their party.
