OTJIWARONGO, 13 DEC (NAMPA) - A 36-year-old man died instantly after the Toyota pick-up he had been driving crashed into a 65-seater bus on the B1 road between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja on Thursday.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Chief of Operations in the Otjozondjupa Region, Chief Inspector Levi Richter told Nampa that the bus was travelling from the direction of Otjiwarongo to Okahandja, while the pick-up had been coming from the opposite direction when the accident occurred.
It happened around 12h00, approximately 110 kilometres outside Otjiwarongo on the road to Okahandja.
Richter said the cause of the accident has not yet been established, but preliminary police investigations have shown that the pick-up swerved into the lane of the bus before the crash.
“Because of the strong impact of the crash, the pick-up rolled several times,” he explained, adding that the driver died on the spot.
The police used the Jaws of Life to cut open the vehicle in order to remove the deceased’s body.
“It took us more than 30 minutes to remove his body from the wrecked vehicle,” Richter indicated.
Two other passengers who had been travelling in the pick-up sustained injuries, and were rushed to the Okahandja State Hospital for treatment.
Eight people who were in the bus, including the driver, escaped unhurt.
Police investigations continue.
