REHOBOTH, 20 NOV (NAMPA) – The Brave Warriors have a chance to participate in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Cameroon if they avoid defeat away to Zambia during their qualifying match in March 2019.
The Brave Warriors played out an exciting goalless draw against Guinea-Bissau in their Group K qualifier at Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.
A statement issued by the Namibia Football Association on Monday said following the weekend result of Namibia and Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique beating Zambia 1-0, the Brave Warriors still have their destiny in their own hands.
It said there are various ways to reach the finals to be played in Cameroon between 15 June and 13 July 2019.
Namibia can qualify for the 2019 Afcon finals if they avoid defeat to Zambia in March 2019 or even if they lose to Zambia and Mozambique lose to Guinea-Bissau.
“If the Brave Warriors lose to Zambia and Mozambique draw against Guinea-Bissau, they still will qualify as Namibia have a better head to head against Mozambique after their home and away win against the Mambas,” the statement said.
Guinea-Bissau and Namibia are top of Group K on eight points each with Mozambique in third place on seven points, while Zambia are on four points and out of the race for a place in next year’s showpiece in Cameroon.
“Our destiny is in our hands, we need to treat it as such and we should go to Zambia with the aim of not losing. We are in the driving seat and we have to do it ourselves,” national team coach, Ricardo Mannetti said in the statement.
The group winner and the runner-up will qualify for the 32nd edition of the Total Africa Cup of Nations.
So far, the teams that have qualified are host Cameroon, Nigeria, Madagascar, Uganda, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Mali, Senegal, Guinea, Mauritania and Ivory Coast.
