WINDHOEK 15 NOV (NAMPA) – An earthquake measuring 3,7 on the Richer Scale was recorded approximately 45 kilometres North-West of Palmwag in the Kunene Region on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy said in a statement issued on Wednesday that the earthquake was recorded at 04h51 by three local seismic stations and preliminary analyses were performed on the recorded data.

“At present, three phase readings for initial calculations were picked up by the geological survey in Windhoek, Tsumeb and Rundu, [which] show that the occurrence time was 04h51 local time and it lasted for about 10 seconds,” said the statement.

It further said that preliminary calculations indicate that the current epicenter of the event is located in the Kaoko Orogenic belt, which is the regional tectonic structure.

The current location is one of the known seismic zones in the country and these events are expected to occur more frequently in this area, the statement adds.
