WINDHOEK, 14 NOV (NAMPA) – Preparations for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Namibia and Guinea-Bissau are on track with all players now in camp, Brave Warriors head coach Ricardo Mannetti has said.
The match will be played at Windhoek’s Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday.
Speaking to Nampa on the sidelines of the team’s training session Tuesday evening at the match venue, Mannetti said Riaan !Hanamub was the only exception as he lost his father this week.
“For now we can only support Riaan and his family as they are going through a tough time. All the guys are in camp and training well. We will assess Deon Hotto’s fitness on Thursday,” Mannetti said.
He added that the team had enough depth and they will not put any pressure on !Hanamub to play.
The coach included that they added Elmo Kambindu from Mighty Gunners for his physical attributes.
“We brought him in to help us simulate match day aerial battles. We want our players to get used to his strength and aerial presence,” Mannetti explained, before clarifying that Kambindu will not form part of the 23 players on match day.
He further called on all Namibians to come in numbers to support the national team as they are on the brink of qualifying for the bi-annual tournament.
“The 12th man should be standard in such games, otherwise the players will not feel the importance of this game. The fans need to come and push the players. We must fill up the stadium and make sure we support them on the day,” the coach said.
Namibia needs to win the match to keep their hopes of qualifying for Afcon 2019 in Cameroon from 15 June to 13 July 2019 alive.
They are currently in second place behind their Saturday opponents, with both teams on seven points.
The group winner and the runner-up will qualify for the 32nd edition of the Afcon finals.
