WINDHOEK, 09 NOV (NAMPA) – The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture on Tuesday released the 2019 calendar for public schools, which contains an extension of the first school holiday from two to four weeks.
The first school holiday will fall between 12 April and 13 May 2019.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Absalom Absalom in an interview with Nampa said the extension was necessitated by the Education Act No. 16 of 2001, which stipulates that the minimum required days for a school year should be 195 and not exceed 200 days.
Absalom added that the ministry strives to ensure the provision of quality and inclusive education to all Namibian children and that the introduction of the quarter-system (four school terms) is with the specific focus of providing a proper winter school holiday, preferably from mid or end of June to end of July.
He added that the decision comes after research and consultation with parents and stakeholders.
