RUNDU, 08 NOV (NAMPA) – The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare will host a workshop on gender-based violence (GBV) in the Kavango East Region next week.
Johanna Likando, who serves as the ministry’s regional head in Kavango East, told Nampa in an interview on Wednesday the workshop is aimed at seeking input on the National Women’s Economic Empowerment Strategic Framework.
“It will however also serve as a platform for the establishment of a regional GBV cluster,” she said.
The GBV cluster will be made up of participants at the workshop, who will mainly be from government institutions, civil society organisations, churches, traditional leadership and also from the community.
The two-day workshop which will start on Monday will amongst others try to create awareness on the causes of gender-based violence.
The framework, which is under development, will provide strategies, interventions, mechanisms and specific recommendations for support required to ensure that women fully participate in the strategic value chain of key sectors of the Namibian economy.
The Technical GBV Advisor in the ministry, Edwidge Mutale will present concepts on GBV to help participants to come to a common understanding of gender and related issues.
In addition, an official from the Ministry of Justice will clarify the legal provisions and processes used in reporting and prosecuting cases of gender-based violence.
