WINDHOEK, 02 NOV (NAMPA) – It is imperative that gender mainstreaming be extended to the agricultural sector so the gender dimension can be embraced in all agricultural programmes, projects and initiatives.
This was said by Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Doreen Sioka during the official opening of the eighth Katutura Expo here on Thursday.
Sioka said agriculture is a major economic source and it plays a strategic role in economic development and employment creation in any country.
She further said gender mainstreaming will only have an effect and meaning if it is accompanied by gender responsive budgeting.
“Gender responsive budgeting seeks to ensure that the allocation of public resources is carried out in ways that contribute to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment,” said Sioka.
The minister further said women are primary farmers and producers in large parts of the world, however their work continues to largely go unrecognised or at times, unnoticed.
The expo, which is taking place at the Katutura Multipurpose Youth Centre, started on Tuesday and ends on Sunday.
