RUNDU, 30 OCT (NAMPA) – The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Kavango East Region have identified the five-year-old boy who drowned in the Okavango River on Monday afternoon as Oscar Lutangu.
NamPol’s Crime Investigations Coordinator for Kavango East, Deputy Commissioner Bonifasius Kanyetu said the victim hails from the Sauyemwa location.
Kanyetu said Lutangu went to the river with other children to swim and fetch water.
The deceased’s next of kin have been informed of his death.
Kanyetu cautioned residents not to allow children to go to the river unaccompanied by adults.
“These things can be prevented. We all know that the town is faced with water problems but at least parents should accompany their children when going to river,” he said.
Kanyetu said Lutangu could not be saved by the police officers deployed at the river.
The police were deployed there to maintain order because residents flock to the river to fetch water due to the water crisis being experienced in Rundu.
