Man dies after being shot in the chest at Katima

KATIMA MULILO, 07 OCT (NAMPA) – A 26-year-old man died after he was shot in the chest when he tried to protect his cousin, who was allegedly being assaulted by her boyfriend in Katima Mulilo on Friday.
The 35-year-old woman and her boyfriend, who she is in a long-term relationship with, had been arguing at a club situated next to the Zambezi River when the suspect allegedly started assaulting the woman.
Her cousin, Falali Mahoto, then tried to intervene and the man took a pistol out of his car and allegedly shot him in the chest.
Mahoto’s next of kin have been informed.
The woman was taken to the Katima Mulilo State Hospital, where she was reported to be in a critical but stable condition.
The suspect was arrested at Kalumba village some 10 kilometres south of Katima Mulilo while trying to flee.
A pistol registered in his name and loaded with 12 bullets, was found in his possession, as were another 16 reserved rounds of ammunition for the same pistol.
The Namibian Police Force’s crime investigation coordinator for Zambezi, Deputy Commissioner Evans Simasiku confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect will appear in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
