Khorixas rapist and murderer sentenced to 35 years in prison

OTJIWARONGO, 02 OCT (NAMPA) – A 25-year-old man was on Tuesday sent to jail for 35 years in connection with the rape and murder of a 34-year-old woman at Khorixas on 18 June 2014.
The victim, Dorothy Dolly Hoaes was raped and strangled in a riverbed behind a local lodge at Khorixas in the Kunene Region.
Ebson Goraseb was arrested a few hours after the incident in 2014.
Goraseb during his trial in the Otjiwarongo Regional Magistrate’s Court confessed to having first raped Hoaes and later strangling her to death upon realising that he had committed a punishable crime by having sexual intercourse with her, without her consent.
Goraseb narrated to the court that he met Hoaes that night at a fuel station in Khorixas and agreed to escort her to her family residence.
“As we walked through the riverbed, I developed a desire to have sexual intercourse with her,” he said, adding that he then shared a proposal in this regard with Hoaes as they walked, but she refused.
Goraseb added that he then opted to use physical force to rape her.
“After raping the deceased, Dolly, I panicked and got scared that she will report me. That’s when I strangled her to death,” he told the court in the presence of his defence lawyer, Natji Tjirera.
Control Prosecutor, Leonard Tjiveze who represented the State in the matter, asked the court for a stiff punishment for Goraseb.
Regional Magistrate, Marilize du Plessis then sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment on the charge of murder and another 15 years on the rape charge.
In total, Goraseb was on Tuesday sentenced to a direct 35 years in prison.
