WINDHOEK, 07 DEC (NAMPA) - President Hifikepunye Pohamba says the late Nelson Mandela was an extraordinary person, a towering giant who dedicated his life to the freedom and justice of the people of South Africa who were subjected to apartheid oppression.
President Hifikepunye Pohamba in a tribute statement issued on Friday described the late former South African President as a true liberation icon and a statesman whose exemplary life and work inspired many, not only in South Africa and in the region, but also globally.
Mandela died in Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday evening after a long battle against lung infection.
“Because of his commitment to the universal principles of freedom and justice for all mankind, he was incarcerated on Robben Island for many years along with his fellow comrades, and our own compatriots, including Andimba Toivo ya Toivo,” the statement reads.
He said Mandela will be missed not only by those who knew him, and the nation that he served so proudly and loved so deeply, but by millions of people around the world.
“On behalf of the government and people of Namibia, and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to convey our deepest condolences and sympathies to the government, the entire bereaved family and the people of South Africa,” Pohamba added.
The South African government on Friday announced that Mandela will be laid to rest on 15 December 2013.
The political icon will receive a State funeral, which is expected to take place in his home village of Qunu in the Eastern Cape.
