WINDHOEK, 02 OCT (NAMPA) – Excess land owned by Germans should be handed over free of charge as part of the ‘Reparation Project’, the Ovaherero/Ovambanderu and Nama Council for the Dialogue on the 1904-1908 Genocide (ONCD 1904-1908) said Monday.
The council further said some land owned by white farmers should be sold to government willingly or should be expropriated at fair compensation.
The ONCD 1904-1908 said this during the second National Land Conference underway here.
The council said such land will be used to resettle people who lost their ancestral land during the genocide, when thousands of Hereros, Namas and Damaras perished, following a extermination order by the imperial German army.
It also called for land owned by absentee landlords to be expropriated without compensation.
The ONCD 1904-1908 expressed the need for communal land to be extended and developed as such, whilst calling on the development of virgin farm land.
It also welcomed the inclusion of ancestral land as a subject for discussion in the conference, noting that such topic is key to the council’s claim for reparation.
“Ancestral land is key in our demand for reparation because it was the Germans’ thirst for ancestral land seizure which triggered the genocide against our ancestors,” it said.
The ONCD 1904-1908 is an apolitical body of traditional leaders established in 2005 to lead Ovaherero, Ovambanderu and Nama communities in their struggle for restorative justice on atrocities committed against their ancestors by colonial Germany.
The conference ends Friday.
