WINDHOEK, 18 SEP (NAMPA) The Okondjatu Combined School in the Otjozondjupa Region will host a first-of-its-kind girls football tournament on 22 and 23 September at the settlement.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, Wilson Nguvauva, the tournaments organiser said the aim of this tournament is to bring girls from the region as well as other regions together and learn on how to bring social change in their communities.
In respect of promoting girls sports, we also want to motivate these girls interest in their schoolwork while at the same time learning how to fight gender discrimination as well as bringing social change to their communities, he said.
Nguvauva added that the tournament will be exclusively for girls under the age of 13, who will compete in football and netball.
If there are schools outside of Okondjatu and Otjozondjupa that want to compete in this tournament, they are more than welcome to contact us because we want to give an opportunity to all the girls in the country to make new friends while at the same time having fun, Nguvauva said.
He stated that apart from netball and football competitions, there will also be a school choir competition and a beauty pageant.
Each school will be required to have a choir consisting of 15-20 learners while for Miss Teen, all the participating schools are required to select one girl that will represent them.
Nguvauva said the winning school in football will walk away with N.dollars 2 400 with a floating trophy and 18 gold medals, while runner-up will win N.dollars 1 200, 18 silver medals and the third and fourth-placed teams will get N.dollars 700 and N.dollars 300 respectively. The third place will also walk away with 18 bronze medals.
In the netball event, the winners will take home N.dollars 1 200 with a floating trophy and 10 gold medals while runner-up will get N.dollars 700, 10 silver medals and the third-placed team will get N.dollars 450 as well as 10 bronze medals.
