OTJIWARONGO, 04 DEC (NAMPA) – A 48-year-old man allegedly hanged himself at the Rooidag Gate temporary police holding cells near Tsumkwe on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rooidag Gate is situated some 160 kilometres east of Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region’s Tsumkwe Constituency.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Otjozondjupa Public Relations’ Officer, Sergeant Maureen Mbeha told Nampa on Wednesday that the deceased has been identified as Xarie Edward.
Mbeha said Edward was arrested at Rooidag Gate on Tuesday at around 15h30 after his wife, the 54-year-old Cgonta Gwaxan, opened a case of domestic violence and common assault against him.
“It is alleged that Edward repeatedly beat up his wife on Tuesday afternoon at their house and later threatened to kill her, prompting Gwaxan to open the case,” she explained.
Edward was arrested later in the day, and when one of the police officers went to check on him at around 19h00, he was found hanging from the burglar bars of the cell’s window with a T-shirt tied around his neck.
An inquest docket has been opened into the matter.
